Applications Being Accepted/Requirements for Training Officer:  01.26.02
As Submitted From:  Executive Officer (SA Astatine)

Training Office

Overview

The position of Training Office is one of the most demanding in the EH. The position covers a wide range and scope of duties, requiring a multi-talented person. The successful applicant will also be under the extra pressure of continuing the standard of work conducted by the previous Training Officer. Some duties of the Training Officer include:

* Marking tests
* Reviewing, approving and implementing new courses
* Reviewing competition submissions
* Assisting all members of the EH in relavent training matters
* Design and running of TO competitions
* Keeping IWATS staff in line
* Filing reports and all the other stuff good COs do

Applicants must address the criteria as laid out below.

Selection Criteria - Essential
1. Proven experience in running competitions, preferably involving a scope larger than a TIE Corps Wing.
2. Good written communication skills.
3. An acceptable level of presence in online media (such as IRC, message boards)
4. Fast email response time.
5. A clean record in conduct.
6. The ability to work with a wide range of EH personnel, including the Executive Office, Flight Officer, Operations Officer and various officers within the TIE Corps and subgroups.

Selection Criteria - Desirable
1. Graphics ability.
2. ASP coding experience.
3. Solid training experience, either within the EH or in real life.

You must address each criteria with supporting evidence. You may also include three references - including at least one of your superiors (either form or current, preferably current). These references will be checked. Applications should be sent to the Fleet Commander (GARonin@aol.com) and Executive Officer (jpboyce@indigo.net.au) with the subject "Application for the position of Training Officer".

XO Report #2:  01.26.02
As Submitted From:  Executive Officer (SA Astatine)

Office of the XO

As many members have noted in the last few weeks, the imperialacademy.org domain has suffered a range of technical problems. I had been hoping these problems would go away but now they are hampering money-making efforts related outside the EH (I use the domain as a staging ground for demos). So, one way or the other, the problems will be fixed soon. The latest problem is relating to email, meaning that the confirmation emails sent out for competitions processing and for Prelude to Andevia ladder matches aren't being sent. A backlog of about 150 was sent a few days ago, but those generated since have not.

This is something I don't really have control over, being Saturday night of a long weekend. The abusive phone call to the XO has to wait till Tuesday.

As per prior discussion with the Fleet Commander, I've decided to introduce two Executive Orders designed to enforce some standardization. The first deals with recommendations, specifically those dealing with the GOE, IC, MoH and OoR medals, as well as promotion recommendations for the rank of Admiral and higher. It's no secret that people, in the past, have left off relevant authorities (like the XO and OPS) in these recommendations to minimize the chances of opposition. Those people do nothing but tarnish the work of those who have genuinely earned their awards and ranks and will not be tolerated. Such recommendations must now include the Executive Officer on the email. The second Executive Order relates to Command Attaches. From now on, the XO and FO must be notified of apparent CA appointees by the relevant CO. Why? So we can check their record and make sure they haven't been a naughty boy or girl. The CA is generally the first in line to replace a CO when he or she leaves the position and we should expect...demand just as high standards from CAs as we do from when we open applications for a CO post. Anyone who tries to get around this will get slapped with a 404 (Failure to obey an order or regulation) charge at the very least.

The requirements for Training Officer have been sent for posting on the EH domain. It will also be posted on the TC news page and the imperialacademy news page. Training Officer and Dean will not be spliting up. There isn't the work to justify splitting the two positions and they would just be in conflict.

The winners of the Design a Bad Guy competition have been selected. The lucky people are:

- FM/LCM Reb Crush/Talon 3-3/Wing XX/ISD Subjugator
- FM/LT Ender mBind/Echo 2-2/Wing XV/ISD Vanguard
- DA Elya (Krath)/Aleema of Satal Keto
- FL-TCS/LCM Master/Tempest 3-1/Wing X/ISD Challenge
- FL/LCM Alain Dindareanu/Omicron 2-1/Wing VIII/ISD Colossus

Congratulations to them. Their entries will be added to the enemies page and we'll start looking at using them in future competitions.

It seems I've made a little screw-up with the Newsletter and it's late. :P It will be released next Friday and in the meantime, I encourage people to sent stuff for the next one to me. Subgroup members are especially encouraged since the newsletter has typically been light on content from subgroup people.

And..um...apparently acquiring Natalie Portman is 20 times a better New year's resolution than finding a cure for cancer (according to http://www.imperialacademy.org/pollresults.asp?ID=10)

TO Report #100/IWATS Report #123/XO Report #1:  01.11.02
As Submitted From:  Executive Officer (SA Astatine)

Well, I've always wanted to get up to report #100 as TO before leaving the position, so I thought I'd skip a few numbers to get there. :P

Prelude to Andevia has started and is currently running. Some of the entries look encouraging so far. It will be running for 2 months and will finish on 7th March 2002. The competition website is at
http://www.imperialacademy.org/comps/prelude/ Be sure to check the news page every now and then as there will be updates posted from time to time. I'm thinking about adding a Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds map design event. And a reminder that the competition is open to all members.

I'll be getting to the judging of the Design a Bad Guy competition during the week and the results will be published (hopefully) by the next report. Also, there's a few courses in the design phase which should be coming out soon.

ID Line Blast from the Past:

GRD ShadowHawk (Sith)/Nuitari of Aquillas (IWATS Core, 15th Jan 2000)
TRN/CT Ciara/Alpha Company/PLT Daedalus (IWATS Core, 15th Jan 2000)
FM/COL Kyle Cantor Kessler/Tornado 1-4/Wing X/ISD Challenge (mIRC/1, 20th Jan 1999)

Now to the XO stuff... :P

Well, I guess first lots of thanks to go around. First for all the congratulations. Also thanks to those who have supported the efforts of IWATS and the Training Office, be it taking tests, making courses or participating in competitions. And lastly, thanks to Ronin for not canning me earlier and giving me this wonderful opportunity. :P

A slightly boring historical overview of me - Joined the EH in Feb 1998. I've held high-level positions in the DB, HF, BHG and IW. I've been Dean for nearly 4 years and TO for nearly 3. I'm an Aussie, making me the first non-American XO. :P I'm also XO #7 (if the information in the Codex is to be believed). Some goals I've come up with which I'd like to achieve as XO include:

* Stabilize the smaller subgroups.
* Eventually get all smaller subgroups to at least 100 members each and then least 200 members each.
* Get the EH membership count to 5,000.
* Raise the bar for all COs in terms of performance.
* Raising activity levels.
* More subgroup content in Newsletters.
* More interaction and better relationships between the subgroups and with other Star Wars clubs.

Now for a short FAQ to answer all those annoying questions :P

Q. What's happening to TC.org/the EH database?
A. The TC site and database will be moving to Ronin's ownership. Because of various issues, we can't keep the EH database and it will go offline in a month or two.

Q. Can I be your CA:XO/XOA/love slave?
A. No. >:P

Q. What's happening with TO?
A. It will be open for applications. Details on the domain soon.

Q. What's happening with www.imperialacademy.org ?
A. Staying online.

Q. Can you help me further my petty personal vendetta/crusade?
A. No :P

Q. When is the XO site going online?
A. Monday hopefully.

Um, I think that's about it. :P

Star Wars Celebration II Info:  01.11.02
As Emailed From:  FL-TACA-SCOA/LCM Samuel Shadd III/Iota 3-1/Wing VIII/ISD Colossus

<SALUTE>

Good evening, Sir.

I haven't seen any news on tc.org or eh.org about it and thought it wise to show this information
to you. I copied this from: http://www.theforce.net/celebration/index.html#13829

Fan Clubs at Celebration II
Fri, Jan 11, 02 09:29:44 PM EST

So you have a fan club and would like to be at Celebration 2? Well here is a blipvert on what you need to do

Guidelines for Fan Club Participation at Celebration II

There will be up to 20 free fan club table spaces available at Celebration II for unofficial fan clubs and similar organizations. These tables will allow the clubs to promote their organizations to other Star Wars fans, and act as a central location for club activities at Celebration. No club will be allowed to sell any merchandise or service at their table. If a club wants to sell anything, it must buy a booth in the Exhibitors Hall. If the club requires any utilities or equipment other than an 8 table and two chairs, the club needs to make specific arrangements with the facility or the official decorator at the prevailing rate. The hanging of signs and banners from the ceiling will not be allowed, so free standing or tabletop signage should be considered. The approximate space that will be allocated for each club will be 10 wide by 8 deep. Fan club tables most likely will be located on the second floor, in the Serpentine Lobby area. The tables must be staffed by at least one person at all times during the hours that the Exhibitors Hall is open.

Thanks to Mary Franklin at Lucasfilm.

For the complete lowdown check out StarWars.com and maybe we will see you there

Science Office Report #28 - Working Axial Superlaser for XWA:  01.14.02
As Emailed From:  Science Officer (AD Darkhill)

Science Office

*Salute*

Welcome to SCO report number 28, sorry that this one is late but moving back into the dorm and getting internet access again proved to be a bit of a challenge. First off I would like to thank the Fleet Command and former XO Kawolski for the Grand Order of the Emperor medal that I was awarded. And I would also like to congratulate Kermee for his recent Commendation of Loyalty, it was well deserved. Despite this it has been a pretty good week around here, most importantly is a new toy for XWA mission designers.

The biggest news this week is the release of a working axial superlaser for XWA. This is not a work around like the Death Star superlaser trick that was discovered awhile back. This is an actual opt that can move and be targeted. The laser has a range of around 40 clicks and will destroy anything in the game. Further instructions for its use and placement on craft can be found in the howto text file contained in the zip. A very big thanks goes out to CPT Gidda figuring out the orders scheme to make this work.

This week also marks the first two releases of limited use craft. The modified CORT Xunrunner and modified Firespray Savannah's Revenge, both BHG craft have been approved for Fleet usage. Both of these craft reside in different craft slots so that they can be used together if so desired. These fine craft have also been edited by CPT Gidda.

In slicing news outside of the EH, the XWAU version of the IRD has been released. As with all of the XWAU ships this one is of the highest quality. It can be found at the XWAU website (http://www.xwaupgrade.com).

TAC/FA Striker Appointed Medal of Honor (MoH) Medal:  01.16.02
As Recommended By:  CA:TAC/VA Marcin "Mike" Szydlowski

(Please see Operations Manual for medal descriptions)

<salute>

Hello GA_Ronin.

I don't know if I should do this. but I would like to recommend FA Striker to highest EH award, EH Medal of Honor. FA Striker, EH Tactical Officer is doing great job, performing his duties very well. He's always active, trying to improve this fleet all the time, giving new ideas, organizing competitions, catching cheaters. He's always open for suggestions, he treat's his assistants very well, and he makes working for him fun and simply great.

Thanks to him we've got over 2000 missions in compendium and this number still increases. He is great Tactical Officer, probably the best EH ever had. (I am here only two years, and I served under 4 different TACs).

Thank you for your time Grand Admiral. Please consider this. TAC's job is very hard and FA Striker is working without any award for over year.

Another thing:

I would like to personally thank you, GA, for creating EH. Some people say it's only virtual organization. But for me and many others it's much more. Why? Thanks to EH I met my girlfriend (she will probably be my wife soon), so I am incredibly happy.

Long Live the Empire

Respectfully...

Final XO Report:  01.10.02
As Emailed From:  Former Executive Officer (SA Kawolski)

Office of the XO
(URL to be be updated soon...!)

<SALUTE>

The will most likely be the last time I address the fleet in this matter. As many of you may have been aware, there has been an extremely sharp decline in my activity and response time in the past month. I have to confess that I no longer have had the time nor will to continue or fulfill my duties as Executive Officer and have been planning my retirement plans and working out key issues over that period of time.

My reasons for leaving are simple: lack of time and interest. Over the last month, my workload in my real life job has increased tenfold. What free time I do have has diminished sharply after deciding to return to university. Instead of taking up space and being inactive, I have chosen to finally retire from the Emperor's Hammer in its entirety and move on with my life. This time, I don't have an interest in future positions. GA Ronin has asked me to stay on as Fleet Systems Engineer temporarily until I finish moving stuff off my server.

Taking my place will be the Training Officer, HA Astatine (jpboyce@indigo.net.au). He has been a member of this club for many years and I'm sure he'll make an excellent replacement. The TIE Corps Database, website, and data will all be transferred to GA Ronin over the next month and Astatine will be able to make code updates. If all goes well, the TC will not lose anything except perhaps suffer a little bit of downtime. CA:XO VA Canta Jade will remain to finish up the overdue Newsletter (November 2001 Issue) and hopefully be around to help Astatine compile the December 2001 Issue as well. The EH Database system, however, will need to be reconstructed. For legal reasons, I cannot give out the code that I used for the EH Database. I'll keep it online for a month or two to allow the Fringe, Corporate Division, and Senate to use the old system while they eventually migrate to another database system that somebody else in the fleet can construct. The operational costs for keeping the domain up is about $70 a month for me and they're getting higher as the domain requires more and more bandwidth.

I've been rather pleased with my tour of duty here in the club. I have managed to bring the TIE Corps from the dead as FO, resurrect a dysfunctional Tactical Office as TAC, and hopefully have made some sort of difference for many as XO. I have managed to earn every medal in the TC (with the exception of some of the newer Iron Stars and obsolete MoCs), I have made many good friends in this club, and I have really enjoyed my time here. While I believe there is a lot more I could do for and offer to this club, I sadly must hang up my uniform and call it quits. The club will continue to do fine without me and I will stop by every now and then to say hello.

Take care, everyone, and good luck in the future! :)

Retired Sector Admiral Kawolski

FLEET COMMANDER'S NOTE:

SA Kawolski is perhaps the best Executive Officer (XO) the EH has ever seen.  His dedication and consistency have made him invaluable in making the EH as popular and well run as it is today.

His EH Database which is central to the TIE Corps and several Subgroups, has become one of our greatest contributions.  Over the next 1-2 months, SA Kawolski, SA Astatine and myself will be arranging to switch over the EH Database to an ISP I will pay for; thereby guaranteeing that we will not have to switch again.

Again, my personal thanks for a tough job well done !!!

Concurrent with his promotion to Executive Officer (XO), Astatine has been promoted to the Rank of Sector Admiral and become 25% "co-owner" of the Emperor's Hammer.  SA Astatine was selected by SA Kawolski and myself after some serious deliberations.  Consistently, HA Astatine turned out to be the best candidate.  Congrats to the new XO !

EH Competition Announcement - Prelude to Andevia:  01.07.02
As Submitted From:  Executive Officer (HA Astatine)

Prelude to Andevia

A small scout force is sent to investigate Andevia, an unexplored world on the Outer Rim. Comprised of elite members of the Emperor's Hammer, the force is suddenly silent, no longer transmitting reports. Could it be the recently arrived New Republic fleet around the planet? Or the native Andevians? Or one of the scout force members?

Prelude to Andevia is a plot-driven Emperor's Hammer competition from the Training Office. It is available to all members of the Emperor's Hammer and will run from 7th January til 7th March 2002. A wide range of events is included:

* Five (5) fiction events
* TIE/XvT/XWA Mission, JK level and general Jedi Knight design
* Graphics, humour and more.

FCHG Mission Creation Contest #2 Results:  01.07.02
As Emailed From:  Tactical Officer (FA Striker)

Tactical Office

Happy Birthday Emperor's Hammer, and here are some new FCHG Battles for your glory !

The second edition of the FCHG Mission Creation Contest is now over, with the results hereby released; the winning submissions which become new official FCHG Battles are:

- TIE-FCHG Battle 4: Nomads and Superlasers, by LCM Talas (awarded IS-PR)
- TIE-FCHG Battle 5: Attack from Within, by LCM Dujhod (awarded IS-SR)
- XvT-FCHG Battle 2: Eye for an Eye, by LCM Kittenclaw and LC Halcyon (awarded IS-PR)
- XWA-FCHG Battle 3: Ronin's Deception, by MAJ RogueWing (awarded IS-PR)

Thanks for those who took the time to enter the competition, the winning submissions are once more of greater quality. The only disappointment is the low participation compared to the first edition, though more time was given and more advertisement was made. I guess December is not an as good as time for activty than during summer, but I can't change the date of the EH's Birthday ;) The next edition will take place during July, results to be released for the FC's Birthday. Rating of the submissions was made prior any correction, TIE and XWA submissions were reviewed and corrected by TAC/FA Striker, XvT ones by CA:TAC/RA Marcin Szydlowski, and no tug was harmed during the testing. By the way, my Command Attach is hereby promoted to the rank of Vice Admiral for his great help during the past months. Let's congratulate him as well.

See you next summer for the third edition of the competition !

Wizards of the Coast - Leading Developer of Trading Card Games - Secures Rights to Star Wars Universe

Legendary Game Designer Creates New Star Wars Trading Card Game

January 1, 2002 (Renton, Wash.) - Leading game developer Wizards of the Coast, a subsidiary of Hasbro, Inc. (NYSE: HAS), announced today that it has been awarded an exclusive multi-year worldwide license for trading card games (TCG) based on the entire Star Wars saga. This deal represents a long-term partnership between Lucasfilm and Wizards of the Coast that will give fans high-quality Star Wars TCG releases for many years to come.

The game's innovative game mechanic enhances the rich Star Wars experience by allowing players to plan and execute the high-stakes gambits and intense action of a climactic Star Wars battle. Star Wars TCG releases will draw content from every Star Wars era including the enormously successful Star Wars movies and the wildly popular Star Wars expanded universe. The first Star Wars TCG release, which includes content from the highly-anticipated Star Wars: Attack of the Clones movie, will be available in stores in April 2002.

Trading card game players and Star Wars fans will be interested to learn that world-renowned game designer Richard Garfield created the Star Wars TCG. Garfield, who originated the trading card game concept when he developed Magic: The Gathering in 1993, has taken the TCG concept to a new level by developing a single game that will appeal to players of all experience levels. An easy-to-learn starter game is the perfect introduction for novice trading card game players, while a more complex version of the same game will challenge even the most seasoned trading card game players. Another unique feature of Garfield's game design is the use of dice for conflict resolution.

With the Star Wars trading card game, players get in on the same thrilling action found in the Star Wars movies. Players start by choosing to be a part of either the light side or the dark side, and then build their forces from a wide array of vehicles, ships, and characters from the Star Wars saga.

"By working with the industry leaders and originators of the trading card game mechanic, we know that the Star Wars trading card game will deliver the quality, excellence and long-term play value that our fans expect," said Howard Roffman, president of Lucas Licensing Ltd.

Wizards of the Coast, the pioneers of trading card game organized play (OP) tournaments and events, will continue its ongoing strategy of encouraging competition and game-play through organized play programs. On the heels of the release of the Star Wars TCG, Wizards of the Coast will launch a DCI-sanctioned OP system, which will include instructional leagues, competitive tournaments, and championship events.

"With fierce, energetic battles, the Star Wars universe provides the perfect backdrop for the uniquely dynamic game mechanics of the Star Wars TCG," said Carole Pucik, brand manager for the Star Wars TCG. "The trading card game will let players choose and implement their own complex strategies for fierce head-to-head battles."

Lucas Licensing Ltd. manages all the domestic and international merchandising activities of the Star Wars and Indiana Jones properties. Star Wars is the most successful film-based merchandising program in history. The Star Wars licensing program is renowned for its attention to product detail and quality in the fields of publishing, toys, games, collectibles, apparel and other categories. For more information on Star Wars, visit www.starwars.com.

Later this month Wizards of the Coast will be launching the official Star Wars Trading Card Game website which will include sneak previews, behind the scene articles, and announcements about the game prior to release.

As an exclusive sneak preview, here is your first look at the product logo and card back!

SCO AD Darkhill Awarded Grand Order of the Emperor (GoE) Medal:  01.04.02
As Recommended By:  Tactical Officer (FA Striker)

(Please see the Operations Manual for medal descriptions)

Greetings,

While the Emperor's Hammer is going to enter his 8th year of activity, I would like to highlight the continuous good work of one of my fellow, Science Officer Den Darkhill. SCO for over eight months, Darkhill has always fulfilled his duties with efficiency, issuing reports on a weekly basis, and has continuously provided the fleet with new little patches with his Command Attach while feeding the slicing community with information and help through the Slicing forum and the SCO Site

Therefore I would like to recommend him for the Grand Order of the Emperor, considering the only reward he got in his eight months as SCO is his promotion to the (minimum) rank of Admiral over three months ago.

Thank you for your consideration.

FA Stalker Awarded Medal of Honor (MoH) for Command of EH Intel:  12.30.01
As Submitted From:  Fleet Commander (GA Ronin)

(Please see the Operations Manual for medal descriptions)

For his outstanding work as SDIR of EH Intel and before he takes over at Security Officer (SO), the Fleet Commander (GA Ronin) and Executive Officer (SA Kawolski) have selected FA Stalker for award of the EH Medal of Honor (MoH).

For some time now, I have wanted to award FA Stalker for his tireless dedication at a thankless job.  But have been procrastinating.  That job is to keep the EH "safe" from external and internal threats to our club.  Now, I am not talking about "cloak and dagger stuff".  Merely, EH Intel has been particularly astute at keeping tabs on "bad eggs" within and outside the EH that desire us only harm.  He has often cautioned/warned myself and the XO regarding potential troublemakers (i.e. hackers or people planning to 'take over' a part of the EH).  This has allowed us more than ample time to either diffuse the situation or at least contact the offender's ISP.  He has also kept us apprised of problematic folks on IRC...and there are a few...His group (EH Intel) has also categorized and identified all known problem clubs which wish us ill.

EH Intel and particularly the SDIR, have OFTEN been the brunt of criticism and ill will within the rank and file Membership.  But all of us should realize that these guys do the 'dirty work' and grunt work the rest of us would rather not want to perform.  When you get a chance, thank them...! :)

FA Stalker, congrats and my personal thanks for a job well done !!!

Updates/Recommendations (Annual XO Awards):  12.30.01
As Submitted From:  Executive Officer (SA Kawolski)

Office of the XO

My CA:XO, RA Canta Jade, is hereby promoted to the rank of Vice Admiral.

These well-deserving Vice Admirals have been overlooked and are overdue for their promotions to Admiral:

I would like to recommend DP Trench for the Order of the Renegade. While he does run the "scummiest" subgroup in the EH, he has led them to be one of the most consistently structurally stable and active subgroups in the fleet. If time wasn't short, I could go on about the list of things Trench has done to make the BHG one of the EH's best subgroups, and even though he and I haven't been on the best of terms during my administration, there's no denying his achievements within his own subgroup.

The Official End of SW:CCG:  12.29.01
As Emailed From:  Arania Lawakiro aka Trala

Sirs,

As you might have heard, Decipher lost the license for all SW related CCGs ...(edited by FC)...

This means that the product will partly become public domain, but I am unsure about the dreamcards. So I mailed Warren Holland and asked about the EH getting permission for their own set of dreamcards for the games (I have worked for Decipher on several conventions and am still tournament director, so they should remember me).

It would be good if the news about this developement could be posted on the domain next update, too, since some of the EH's players might want to make use of Decipher's special offers.
