Section 4: Moffs

Moffs

Moff Tiaan Jerjerrod

Tiaan Jerjerrod was a human male from the Core World of Tinnel IV. He was a technocrat, engineer, bureaucrat and military officer who served as a Rear Admiral and Moff. He was previously an architect and starship designer but was eventually granted the rank of Moff and made station commander of the DS-2 Death Star II Mobile Battle Station. In part because of his previous work on the first Death Star.

Tasked with overseeing the battle station's final construction efforts, sufficient failure could easily have resulted in his death as both Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine oversaw his work. However work did fall behind schedule and when our Emperor eventually did come to the station there were no consequences, possibly because the station was ultimately armed and fully functioning in time for Palpatine's plan to bring the Rebel Fleet together over Endor. The Emperor even kept Jerjerrod as Commander and authorized him to operate the stations superlaser against the Rebel ships at will.

He died aboard the second Death Star when the Millennium Falcon blew the core triggering a chain reaction, killing everyone who didn't escape in time.

Some accomplishments include
  • He attended the University of Coruscant, where he was a member of the Taung & Zhell Society.
  • He was a diligent student at an engineering academy until his high grades earned him a job drafting plans for warehouses. Then his plans for a freight depot on Ord Mantell caught the eye of the prestigious Corellian Engineering Corporation, and he was hired as a starship designer.
  • His designs for an interstellar trash hauler resulted in him getting recruited by the Galactic Empire.
  • Jerjerrod thrived in the ordered world of the Imperial Navy, and at 21 he held the rank of Rear Admiral and was a member of the Joint Chiefs. An incredible feat.
  • He helped build the first Death Star, believing its mere existence would deter attacks without ever being used.
  • Jerjerrod was made a Moff and station Commander of the DS-2 during its construction and was assigned to supervise the difficult endeavor of completing that superweapon. He was given the cover title of Director of Imperial Energy Systems due to the project's secrecy.
  • When the construction of the second Death Star slowed, due to problems ranging from budget cuts and supply chain breakdowns to the shortage of construction workers, resulting in Vader threatening his life, he quickly devised a plan to make his workers work faster. He took Darth Vader on a tour of the areas under construction. Vader apparently was impressed even calling the work “adequate” and asked the Moff his opinion on what was causing the delays.

Some failures include
  • The Moff attempted and failed to make sure that all the exhaust ports of the DS-2 were heavily armored, fixing the fatal flaw of the original Death Star. However, the architect faced a number of problems, including Vader instructing him to finish the station, not to focus on past failures. His solution was to finish the laser, succeeding in “finishing” the station but failing to fix the fatal flaw he knew was present.
  • Was nearly choked to death by Darth Vader when Jerjerrod told him he could not see the Emperor. He barely got the words out that it was a direct order from Palpatine, prompting Vader to stop. Any later and he could have jeopardized the efficiency of the superlasers effect on the Rebel Fleet by having a subordinate take his position with not enough time to appropriately take on the responsibilities.

Applicable Lesson
  • If you know there is a fatal flaw part of your job, regardless of what your job is, is to see that it's corrected. Even if your supervisor was Darth Vader. Find a way.
  • Avoiding even the appearance of a power trip when talking to a Sith or Dark Jedi who can easily kill you is vital to keeping the efficiency of workers high by limiting the number of crew who move up in rank without adequate training.

Grand Moff Valco Pandion

Valco Pandion was a human male in the Galactic Empire who until the Battle of Endor held the position of Moff. He then proclaimed himself Grand Moff after the death of Emperor Palpatine and his apprentice Darth Vader.

Pandion was a member of the Imperial Future Council that met on Akiva and was killed there during the New Republic's assault on Imperial forces.

Pandion was known for his pugnacious and hawkish attitudes, with brute force as his default solution. He was an ambitious opportunist who made bold moves which allowed him to seize power in the confusion of our Emperor's death.

Some accomplishments include
  • Pandion raised through the ranks to command his own Imperial Star Destroyer, Vanquish.
  • Had the initiative and bravado to declare himself Grand Moff while others stood around in confusion with no clue what to do.
  • He also owned a yacht, the Golden Harp. You may ask, is that an accomplishment? Well, do you have a yacht?

Some failures include
  • Abandoned the communications station he commanded, along with the troopers under him, on the planet Malastare when it was attacked by New Republic forces.
  • Pandion was very self-centered, paying little attention to those below him in the ranks, dismissing their concerns and ignoring their opinions and when he needed their help they actively turned against him.
  • His short-sightedness and dismissive nature allowed the Rebel threat to grow into Republic. Seeing them as squabbling malcontents without the ability to stop him, until they killed him
  • Pandion once abandoned his men and a communications station on Malastare when the New Republic attacked.

Applicable Lesson
  • Troopers are nothing without their commanding officer but commanding officers are nothing without their troopers. It may be necessary to abandon a planet, or send everyone under you to their deaths in pursuit of preserving the Empire but doing it out of cowardice is unacceptable.
  • Those below you will only follow you if they love, fear or respect you. Inspire all three and they'll defend you to the last. Inspire none and they'll walk away or come at you.
  • The foolhardy die the death of a fool. Underestimating the Rebel threat is what killed our Emperor. The consequences of overestimating your enemy is being prepared, the consequences of underestimate is failure and death.
  • Living to fight another day is worthless if you destroy the entirety of your reputation in the process because next time you will fight alone.
